Herb rich, cattle grazed meadows of considerable botanical interest adjoin both sides of the River Mill. A new straight channel has been cut for the river, upstream of Brightwell Bridge and the abandoned meandering watercourse forms a valuable habitat for plants such as watercress and brooklime. Downstream of the bridge, the meadows are spring fed and the high water table throughout the summer provides ideal conditions for a wide range of wetland species including southern marsh orchid, meadow saxifrage, ragged robin and distant sedge. Lapwing and redshank are known to have bred on the meadow. Furthermore, amphibians are abundant in the marshy conditions.
