such as Heracleum sphondylium (Hogweed), Poa pratensis (Smooth Meadow-grass) and Veronica chamaedrys (Germander Speedwell) are common and widespread species. The presence of Saxifraga granulata (Meadow Saxifrage) in the sward is indicative of moist base rich soils. The vegetation is referable to the NVC type M27b Filipendula ulmaria – Angelica sylvestris mire, Urtica dioica – Vicia cracca sub- community. An NVC table for Target Note 375 is given in table Table 7.15.
Species lists for target notes 342, 344 and 375 are included in Table 8.9.
3.4.4 Tall Herb and Fern 3.4.4.1 Bracken
Species-poor vegetation dominated by Pteridium aquilinum (Bracken) was recorded at Target Notes 161 and 186. Target Note 161 is referable to the NVC type W25a Pteridium aquilinum-Rubus fruticosus underscrub, Hyacinthoides non-scripta sub-community and Target Note 186 to W25b Pteridium aquilinum-Rubus fruticosus underscrub, Teucrium scorodonia sub-community.
3.4.4.2 Tall Ruderal
Areas of tall ruderal vegetation were largely confined to ditch banks and as field-layers of the more species-poor woodlands.

Coastal Habitats Shingle
Much of the shingle at the landfall (Target Note 250a) is unvegetated. For much of the area of survey the beach remains relatively narrow and is probably too heavily disturbed by waves for coastal plant species to become established. At Target Note 250 the shingle becomes wider and less disturbed by the waves, consequently coastal vegetation referable to a very species-poor SD1a Rumex crispus-Glaucium flavum shingle community, typical sub-community has become established. This vegetation zone is relatively large varying from 5 to 40 m across and extends along the beach from OS Grid Ref. TM 34899 38966 to TM 34167 38198 roughly parallel to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) land at the top of the cliff. It comprises mostly Crambe maritima (Sea-kale) scattered across the beach with occasional Glaucium flavum (Yellow Horned-poppy) and extremely scarce Rumex crispus (Curled Dock). A species list is given in Table 8.10. Plant species recorded from the shingle at Target Note 250
3.5.2 Maritime cliff vegetation
The maritime cliff vegetation at described in Target Notes 251a, 251b, 251c and 251d is highly variable in it species content. This variation is related to the amount of erosion by the sea that has occurred in the recent past. The substrate of the cliff comprises layers of gravel and a sand/soil matrix that has been colonised or seeded with plant species
