Target Note 194. Extensive area of unimproved calcifugous grassland with scattered mature Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak) trees, Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) shrubs and Ulex europaeus (Gorse) scrub. The grassland is rabbit grazed and such has a sward height of ranging between 1 and 3 cm. Agrostis capillaris (Common Bent) is the most abundant grass species but the presence of occasional Festuca ovina (Sheep’s-fescue) implies that this area is unimproved. Calcifuges such as Ornithopus perpusillus (Bird's-foot), Potentilla argentea (Hoary Cinquefoil), Teucrium scorodonia (Wood Sage) and Rumex acetosella (Sheep's Sorrel) occur throughout.
Large areas
are dominated by bryophyte species including Dicranum scoparium, Polytrichum juniperinum and Calliergonella cuspidatatum with some small patches containing abundant Cladonia furcata.
Target Note 195. Broadleaved plantation similar to Target Note 184. Target Note 196. Broadleaved plantation similar to Target Note 184. Target Note 197. Broadleaved plantation similar to Target Note 184.
Target Note 198. Semi-improved uncut neutral grassland with a sward height of 20 cm containing Achillea millefolium (Yarrow), Arrhenatherum elatius (False Oat-grass) and Galium verum (Lady’s Bedstraw) with shrubs of Crataegus monogyna, Rosa canina (Dog-rose) and Ulex europaeus (Gorse) and a small 2 m tall Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak) tree.
Target Note 199. An unmanaged Corylus avellana (Hazel) 2 m in height with a semi mature Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak) standard 6 m in height.
Target Note 200. An unmanaged Acer campestre (Field Maple) hedge 5 m in height with a field-layer dominated by Hedera helix (Ivy).
Target Note 201. A semi-improved Arrhenatherum elatius (False Oat-grass) dominated grassland with large patches of ruderal species such as Chamerion angustifolium (Rosebay Willowherb), Senecio jacobaea (Common Ragwort) and Urtica dioica (Common Nettle).
Target Note 202. A 1.5 m deep ditch with flowing water 5 cm deep. Apium nodiflorum (Fool’s Water-cress) forms the emergent vegetation. The steep banks are covered in abundant Festuca rubra (Red Fescue) with frequent Urtica dioica (Common Nettle).
