Martlesham Common is a remnant of a much larger area of heathland known as the Suffolk Sandlings. It consists of patches of diverse acid grassland flora, interspersed with larger areas of bracken and gorse. Amongst the many wild flowers which grow here are bell heather (an uncommon species of heather), field woodrush, nodding thistle and heath bedstraw. Furthermore, the site is important for its population of silver-studded blue butterflies, a rare heathland species which is listed on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Despite considerable recreational pressure, Martlesham Common remains a highly valued heathland area.
