Elytrigia atherica (Sea Couch) with occasional ruderal species such as Helminthotheca echioides (Bristly Oxtongue).
• The ditch at Target Note 306a is approximately 10 m across and has banks dominated by Phragmites australis (Common Reed) with occasional Carex acuta (Slender Tufted-sedge) and Filipendula ulmaria (Meadowsweet) with a tussock of Carex paniculata (Greater Tussock-sedge). The aquatic vegetation is Elodea canadensis (Canadian Waterweed) with occasional Lemna triscula (Ivy-leaved Duckweed) at the edges.
• The ditch at Target Note 150a comprises common and ruderal species including Arctium minus (Lesser Burdock) and Urtica dioica (Common Nettle) as well as Myosoton aquaticum (Water Chickweed) which Simpson (1982) refers to as being associated with old marshes. This ditch also contains several stems of Impatiens glandulifera (Indian Balsam), which is listed on Schedule 9 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Speceis lists for all surveyed ditches are included in Tables Table 8.14 and Table 8.15.
3.6.3 Ponds
There are only a few ponds that could be directly affected by the route, together with a few on the edge of the survey corridor, as follows.
• A small pool is located at Target Note 18a amongst a small copse of Alnus glutinosa (Alder) and Salix alba (White Willow). The pool vegetation comprises emergent and marginal species with the floating aquatics Callitriche stagnalis (Common Water-starwort), Lemna minor (Common Duckweed) and Spirodela polyrhiza (Greater Duckweed). The emergent and marginal species present comprise Carex riparia (Greater Pond-sedge), Juncus inflexus (Hard Rush), Lycopus europaeus (Gypsywort), Mentha aquatica (Water Mint), Myosotis scorpioides (Water Forget-me-not) and Sparganium erectum (Branched Bur- reed). This is surrounded by species of the surrounding species-poor grassland large amounts of Urtica dioica (Common Nettle).
• Ponds used to water cattle are present at Target Notes 21 and 45. Both have no aquatic vegetation. The shores of both ponds are heavily poached by cattle hooves to the extent that the only species that could be said to associated with these ponds are scattered plants of Persicaria amphibia (Amphibious Bistort) on the shores on Target Note 21 and a single plant of Veronica beccabunga (Brooklime) at Target Note 45.
• The pond at Target Note 126a contains no aquatic vegetation. The pond’s emergent vegetation is dominated by Typha latifolia (Bulrush) which has abundant growth of the Schedule 9 listed Myriophyllum aquaticum (Parrot's- feather). Margins are a mixture of rough grassland species such as Arrhenatherum elatius (False Oat-grass) and Heracleum sphondylium (Hogweed) and species typical of damp pond margins, such as Epilobium hirsutum (Great Willowherb) and Hypericum tetrapterum (Square-stalked St John's-wort).
• Target Note 283a describes a pond that has become wholly dominated by stands of Carex riparia (Greater Pond-sedge) and Phragmites australis
