2.1 Phase 1 Habitat Survey The Phase 1 Habitat Survey is the most widely-used UK methodology for cataloguing and mapping wildlife habitat resources over extensive areas. The extended Phase 1 protocol is used for formal Environmental Impact Assessment and other ecological surveys relating to the planning process. All habitats within the Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor and Converter Station Refined Area of Search were surveyed and mapped (Figures 24.2.2a – 24.2.2q) using standard colour codes. The survey corridor (typically 160 m) was extended in certain areas where there were potential constraints on the routing (eg road crossings). Target Notes describe habitats and ecological features of interest. Methodology for this survey follows guidance given in the Handbook for Phase 1 Habitat Survey: A technique for environmental audit (JNCC, 2010).
