I am the artistic director of the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague.
DOX is a new institution which will open in 2008 (www.doxprague.cz). Seeking to
create a new model of cultural institution financed by several different sources, DOX
is a private initiative with a mission to serve the public
I wanted to talk a little bit about a broader historical context of biennials and also of
museums of contemporary art. In the early 1990’s, I became very much aware of the
issue of globalization: I have lived in New York City since 1982 and got a Fullbright
scholarship to do research in Prague for one year in 1990. I assume some of you
might remember that the Czech President Vaclav Havel was very active in
articulating issues of globalization and bringing them to the attention of the
international public. I do remember that I did a small experiment then by mapping
museums and centers of contemporary art. There were many dots on the map all
over Western Europe, North America and Japan, but a very few of them in Eastern
Europe and elsewhere.
If you do the same thing today, it will be a dramatically different map. What does it
mean, how does it change our notion of what contemporary art is and what its
institutions are? We just started to realize this change and reflect on it. I would

Bienallerin ve de çacurrency1dafl sanat müzelerinin daha genifl tarihi bacurrency1lam› hakk›nda biraz
konuflmak istiyorum. 90’lar›n bafl›nda küreselleflme meselesinin bayacurrency1› bilincine
vard›m: 1982’den beri New York’ta yafl›yordum ve Prag’da bir y›ll›k bir araflt›rma
yapmak için 1990’da Fullbright bursu kazand›m. San›r›m baz›lar›n›z, Çek
Cumhurbaflkan› Vaclav Havel’in küreselleflmeye iliflkin konular› aç›k seçik dile
getirmekte ve bunlar› uluslararas› kamunun dikkatine sunmakta çok etkin olducurrency1unu
an›msayacakt›r. O zamanlar çacurrency1dafl sanat müzelerini ve merkezlerini haritalayarak,
küçük bir deney yapt›currency1›m› hat›rl›yorum. Haritan›n Bat› Avrupa, Kuzey Amerika ve
Japonya üzerinde bir sürü nokta vard› ama Docurrency1u Avrupa ve baflka yerlerde çok az
yer iflaretlenmiflti.
Bugün ayn› fleyi yapt›currency1›n›zda, çarp›c› bir flekilde farkl› bir harita ortaya ç›kar. Bu ne
anlama geliyor ve çacurrency1dafl sanat›n ve kurumlar›n›n ne olducurrency1u hakk›ndaki
düflüncelerimizi nas›l decurrency1ifltiriyor? Bu decurrency1iflimin yeni fark›na varmaya ve üzerine
