Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Graphic Designer/ Istanbul, Turkey
I am an Assistant Professor at the Graphics Design Department of Mimar
Sinan University of Fine Arts and a freelance Graphics Designer. The content of this
Forum entitled “After All” is directed at the questioning and analysis of the
relationship of the biennials organized in big cities and what they establish with the
entirety, based on their own internal dynamic. The title of my speech is “After All,
Organizing a Biennial in a Deserted Prison Center”. And the subject of my speech is
the 1st Sinop Biennial: Sinopale has been organized in the summer of 2006 in a
small seaport of Turkey, Sinop, under the initiative and curatorship of Melih Görgün
with the cooperation of European Cultural Association, Beral Madra Contemporary
Art Center and the Italian organisation Nuova Icona.
The question that gave birth to Sinopale was whether if -apart from cultural
organizations taking place in centers like the Istanbul Biennial-, a biennial organized
with the limited facilities of a small city being able to ensure the participation of
international artists, could be successful in Turkey or not. This issue, exactly
touching the soft spot of the disconnection between center and periphery, had been
discussed for a long time in Turkey; the question up to what extent high culture
production could reach the periphery and whether if the biennial itself in this respect
would mean anything for the surrounding public or not.
