From the Periphery to the Centre
A Discussion of the History, Present and Future of the Istanbul Biennial.
As a German scientist of art and culture, curator and writer, I live and work
in Istanbul since 2001. During this time, I was the artistic director and residency
curator of Siemens Sanat (siemens.com.tr/siemenssanat), which is one of the
leading exhibition spaces for contemporary art and Under Construction
(narcity.com.tr/uc), which is a mobile exhibition space especially for sitespecific
installation art. Beside that, I teach as a full time member in the fine arts faculty of
the Yeditepe University and a part time instructor at the master program of the
visual communication department of the Bilgi University/ adschoolistanbul.
The Istanbul Biennial is one of my specialist fields as a researcher, because I write
my PhD about the history of the Istanbul Biennial and its impact on the local art
scene. Beside that, for the last four biennials, I was the head of the guided tour
department. Also, this year, I was chosen to be one of the cocurators of
nightcomers, the public video screening program of the 10th Istanbul Biennial.

‹stanbul Bienali’nin Geçmifli, Bugünü ve Gelececurrency1i Hakk›nda Bir Tart›flma:
Ben Alman bir sanat ve kültür bilimadam›, küratör ve yazar olarak 2001
y›l›ndan bu yana ‹stanbul’da yafl›yor ve çal›fl›yorum. Bu süre boyunca, önde gelen
çacurrency1dafl sanat sergi mekanlar›ndan biri olan Siemens Sanat
(siemens.com.tr/siemenssanat)’›n ve özellikle mekana has yerlefltirme sanat›na
yönelik seyyar bir sergi mekan› olan ‹nfla halinde (narcity.com.tr/uc)’nin sanat
yönetmeni ve daimi küratörüydüm. Bunun yan›nda, Yeditepe Üniversitesi Güzel
Sanatlar Fakültesi’nde tam zamanl›, Bilgi Üniversitesi/Adschool’un Görsel ‹letiflim
Bölümü’nün lisansüstü program›nda da yar› zamanl› okutman olarak çal›fl›yorum.
‹stanbul Bienali, bir araflt›rmac› olarak uzmanl›k alanlar›mdan biri, çünkü doktoram›
‹stanbul Bienali’nin tarihçesi ve yerel sanat dünyas› üzerindeki etkisi hakk›nda
yaz›yorum. Bunun yan›s›ra, son dört bienalden beri Rehberli Tur Bölümü’nün
baflkanl›currency1›n› yap›yorum. Ayr›ca bu y›l, 10. ‹stanbul Bienali’nin Gecegezenler ad›
alt›ndaki halka aç›k video film gösterimi program›n›n eflküratörlerinden biri olarak
