Istanbul Biennial curators who were sitting here two weeks ago. They have realized
the Istanbul Biennial and we didn’t get this kind of discourse from them. I was
disappointed about this retrospective debate. This room was full of people expecting
from the seven curators –I was the eighth– one some kind of self criticism or critical
contribution or other kind of contribution to what has happened since the ten
biennials but that was not the case.
I would like to ask Marcus “Did these curators come from heaven?” Certainly not!
There’s a management which invites these curators. Although the biennial is
managed by a group of people, we don’t question their attitude. We only question the
curator’s attitude forgetting that the curators are commissioned and invited to
Turkey, and a rather limited budget is put in front of them. There is always a dispute
about this limited budget and it was never declared how much is being spent for the
biennial. These curators have to take note what the managers of the biennial are
determining. If you are a foreigner, you come to a city, you have advisors and again
the management selects them. It happens that there are more or less the same
advisors; nothing has changed since 20 years in this management. So I think this is
the most dangerous point. Because when you look at the other biennials at the
world, at least they reform their management system. If we talk about the future, we
have to consider that if future means some kind of transformation or reformation or
whatever, then not only the curator’s attitude, but the attitude of this group of people
who are determining the biennial should change. These people are invisible, their
names are here but we don’t know.
A LISTENER: It seems that it is crucial to understand what you are thinking and
the sources of the problem you are so strongly expressing. If we read a name it
78 SESSION 2 / 2. OTURUM / MARCUS GRAF
altyap›. Bienal bu k›r›lgan altyap› üstüne kurulu. Marcus, durumu tümüyle gayet
kusursuz flekilde tan›mlad›, bunu iki hafta önce burada oturan yedi uluslararas›
Marcus’a sormak isterim “Bu küratörler gökten zembille mi indiler?”
Bu küratörlerin bienalin yöneticilerinin belirlediklerini not etmeleri
gerekir.
bilmiyoruz.
