was conceived by Anda Rottenberg and defines a type of breakfast that is common
but also has slight differences in its content. It represents local and regional
diversities. Continental Breakfast is under the patronage of the regional
intergovernmental organization Central European Initiative which you can find at
www.cei.org. Many meetings of Continental Breakfast have been accomplished since
2003. It started in Venice and continued with the second Forum with an exhibition in
Lubljana which was called “Memory” to which we contributed with a Turkish artist
Gül Ilgaz. Then the meetings followed in Budapest, Estonia, Zagreb, again in Venice,
in Warsaw, etc. The last one was in Venice in the last biennale where the Committee
decided about the title of this symposium in Istanbul.
With this title, we aim to focus and debate on the past, present and future of the
global biennials and their impact on the current and future cultural and artistic
communication and curatorial practices. This is a preposition and it generally covers
the recent past the present and the future of the biennials as the ultimate spectacle
of global contemporary art. The biennials as such, should be continuously examined,
analyzed and evaluated in their influence on artistic creativity and tasks, on the
institutions, on its influence on the institutions and on the art market. Moreover the
impact of the biennial is the major spectacle of the culture industry on curatorial
responsibilities and functions. Their weight on local or regional cultural policies, on
city economies, tourism and public education is an essential field of discussion and
criticism. The inevitable ambiguities and dilemmas related to the concepts, contents,
methods and organizational issues of the biennials are being discussed since
decades. However with the inclusion of new territories with different sociopolitical
and cultural backgrounds, these issues need to be revised. We hope that the
Istanbul Biennial will be a motivating background for a deeper insight into the global

“Herfleyden Sonra” olarak adland›rd›currency1›m›z bu forumda, küresel bienallerin geçmifli,
bugünü ve gelececurrency1i ve bunlar›n günümüzdeki ve gelecekteki kültürel ve sanatsal
iletiflim ile küratörlük uygulamalar› üzerindeki etkisine odaklanmay› ve bu çerçevede
tart›flmay› amaçl›yoruz. Bu bir öneri ve genellikle bienallerin yak›n geçmiflini,
bugününü ve gelececurrency1ini, küresel çacurrency1dafl sanat›n esas büyük gösterisi olarak
kaps›yor. Bienaller asl›nda, sanatsal yarat›c›l›k ve ifller, kurumlar ve sanat piyasas›
üzerindeki etkisi bacurrency1lam›nda, devaml› olarak incelenmeli, çözümlenmeli ve
decurrency1erlendirilmeli. Ayr›ca bienalin etkisi, kültür endüstrisinin küratörlücurrency1e iliflkin
sorumluluklar ve ifllevler üzerine en büyük gösterisi. Yerel veya bölgesel kültür
politikalar›, kent ekonomisi, turizm ve kamu ecurrency1itimi üzerindeki acurrency1›rl›currency1›, olmazsa
olmaz tart›flma ve elefltiri konusudur. Bienallerin kavramlar›na, içeriklerine,
yöntemlerine ve organizasyonel meselelerine iliflkin kaç›n›lmaz belirsizlikler ve
ikilemler on y›llard›r tart›fl›l›yor. Ancak, farkl› sosyopolitik ve kültürel artalanlara
sahip yeni bölgelerin eklenmesiyle beraber, bu meselelerin yeniden gözden
