When I was invited to talk on this panel, as every decent panel participant
should do, I did some web hopping. In the art world there is always a lot of talk
about curators, biennials, their status their practices, their star status.. It is always
one of our favorite conversation topics during boring opening cocktails. Nevertheless
as a conscientious panel participant when I did my web hopping, a good amount
reading and started to think about what I can say in 10 minutes I admit I got
confused. Just as we talk so much about biennials and curators and curatorial
practices, so many people wrote so much about the subject. As the smoke slowly
cleared, my first conclusion was that perhaps a major function of biennials and
curators is to be talked about.
Notice, both on the web and the opening cocktails of exhibitions, we talk a lot more
about curators and biennials than we talk about art. Talking about art is of course a
sticky subject. Talking about other people and events is so much more fun. I know
for us artists, a favorite past time is to badmouth curators who have not selected us
to a particular exhibition. Just like for curators who have not been selected to curate
a particular biennial, the expected code of conduct is to smirch that bieannale.
When you surf on the subject of curators, you come across several favorite topics.

zaman en gözde sohbet konular›m›zdan biridir. Buna racurrency1men, vicdan sahibi bir panel
kat›l›mc›s› olarak, internette araflt›rma ve ciddi say›da okuma yaparken, 10 dakikada
neler söyleyebilececurrency1im hakk›nda düflünmeye bafllad›m ve kabul etmeliyim ki, kafam
kar›flt›. Biz; bienaller, küratörler ve küratöryel pratikler hakk›nda bunca konuflurken,
birçok kifli konuya iliflkin o kadar çok fley kaleme alm›fl ki. Sis yavafl yavafl
dacurrency1›ld›currency1›nda ilk yarg›m; belki de bienaller ve küratörlerin ana ifllevlerinden birinin
“hakk›nda konuflulur olmak” olducurrency1uydu.
Dikkat edin, hem internette, hem de sergilerin aç›l›fl kokteyllerinde biz,
küratörlerden ve bienallerden, sanattan söz etticurrency1imizden daha fazla söz ediyoruz.
Tabii sanat hakk›nda konuflmak hassas bir konu. Baflka insanlar ve olaylar hakk›nda
konuflmak çok daha ecurrency1lenceli. Biz sanatç›lar için biliyorum ki, en gözde ucurrency1rafllardan
biri, bizi belirli bir sergiye seçmemifl olan küratörleri kötülemektir. T›pk› belirli bir
bienalin küratörlücurrency1ünü yapmak üzere seçilmemifl küratörler gibi; beklenen davran›fl
biçimi o bienali karalamakt›r.
