I would like to change the microfocus to a macro one in order to discuss possibilities
and wishes for later Istanbul Biennials. The 10th Istanbul Biennial points into the
future, because as a young biennial of the periphery it is about to become an
institutionalized one of the centre. Hanru was asking about the identity of Turkey. Is
it Islamic, modern, premodern, postmodern, European, or Middle Eastern? I think
that now the time has come for the organizers of the Istanbul Biennial to review its
current conceptual and formal status quo as well as future possible formal and
conceptual directions. On the one hand, there is no way back to the concept of
contemporary art in historical places. At the same time, in order to create a
platform for contemporary art, which is different from any institutionalized gallery, it
needs to connect more honestly and direct to the special and spatial contexts of the
city. A biennial has to develop alternative and experimental forms and concepts.
Otherwise, it will be nothing more, than a decent but boring international exhibition
in any museum in the world.
Due to its flexible form because of the lack of solid exhibition spaces, it has to be
formally and conceptually involved in the city. So, therefore the biennial itself has to
be connected to the various urban and social layers of its spatial context. This has to
be done through artist, curator and researcher residencies as well as various forms
of collaborations and interconnections between the local and global art scene
Beside that, a wide spread and early started educational program including side
events is needed for supporting the development of an audience. If the biennial
wants to be a part of society it needs to actively contribute to the city in order to
discover and review the pluralistic and heterogeneous urban contexts we live in. The
chance of the biennial lays in the adaptation of contemporary art’s site and time
specific character as well as its project orientated production praxis. The biennial

Bienallerin Sonu mu Geldi?
