6. Natural Energy Resources 6.3 The Search for Hydrocarbons in Irish Waters
There are large deposits of oil and natural gas – also called hydrocarbons – under the seabed off the Irish coast. Ireland has the right to claim any resources such as these found off our coast up to a distance of just over 19 km. That equals nearly 90 million hectares of seabed to explore.
Where Are Ireland’s Oil and Gas Deposits?
Ireland has offshore (at sea) and onshore (on land) sites to explore for oil and gas. Figure 4 shows 15 locations, but more than 60 are under investigation for gas discovery around the Irish coast. The Irish government no longer issues new licences to multinational (operating in more than one country) companies to explore Irish land for oil and gas. Ireland is shifting to renewable energy sources.
Hopefully in the near future Ireland will be far less reliant on non-renewable energy. The infographic below and the article on the next page show Ireland’s reliance on oil and gas in 2020.

In pairs answer these questions: 1. What types of transport are reliant on oil as an energy source? 2. Name a company reliant on oil to fuel its transport in Ireland today.

2. Where is the majority of oil and gas exploration happening? Why do you think there is no exploration labelled on the map off the northern coast?
