Explain the development of settlement in Swords, using evidence from the OS map on the opposite page to support your answer.
Swords developed on flat or gently sloping land. For example, a spot height of 31 metres can be seen at O 187 457. The surrounding contour lines descend to 30 and 20 metres, meaning the land is flat enough for construction of buildings and farming to occur without fear of flooding. A number of roads converge on the town. The M1 and R125 roads provide access to the town from the rest of Dublin and Ireland. There are also a number of third class roads, which provide access to the town for the immediate surrounding areas. These roads may have helped trade to develop in the area. The town has a number of bridging points as the Ward River runs through it. At O 183 469, the R125 crosses this river. The third-class roads in the town also cross the river at a number of points. Where bridges are built, trading and towns may develop. The town itself developed very close to the coast. Coastal towns can use the sea as sources of employment should ports develop there, and there is evidence of boating activities at O 211 468. These ports can help trading and further develop settlement in the area.

Without referring to an OS map, how would you describe the development of your own town or village? Use the terms ‘flat land’, ‘transport routes’, ‘bridging ‘ and/or ‘coastal settlement’ in your answer.
