Junior Cycle Geography CYCLONE Working with others
1. 1. Equipment used by volcanologists
The images above show some of the many different pieces of equipment used by a volcanologist when working at a volcano:
Thermal suits, video cameras, rock hammers, digital cameras, walkie-talkies, heat-resistant gloves, fire helmets, metal buckets and gas masks.
Working with a partner, jot down what you think the use is for each instrument mentioned. 2.2 Volcanic Mountains
Most volcanoes are cone-shaped mountains. They start out as a crack in the earth’s crust.
The Formation of Volcanic Mountains Crater
When two plates collide or separate, magma can rise from the mantle to fill the space that opens in the crust – the vent . We call this an eruption , and it can be violent due to the great pressure that the magma is under in the mantle.

When magma wells up from the magma chamber and reaches the surface, it is known as lava. The lava then cools and hardens.
2. The formation of a volcanic mountain
After many eruptions, layers of lava and ash build up around the vent, and a cone -shaped mountain is formed with a crater at the top from which the lava flows.
FUN FACT!
The word ‘volcano’ comes from the name of the Roman God of fire, Vulcan.
