Junior Cycle Geography CYCLONE Case Study: Hurricane Dorian 2019
Hurricane Dorian is the most powerful Category 5 Hurricane to hit the Bahamas since records began. On 23 August 2019, a low-pressure system formed in the Atlantic Ocean. By 24 August, it had become a tropical storm. Four days later, it was classified as a hurricane as it had reached wind speeds of 350 km/hr and higher.
The islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama were the worst affected. At least 65 people were confirmed to have died on just these two islands, with many more missing. It was estimated that 13,000 homes were severely damaged or destroyed.

3. The pathway of Hurricane Dorian
1. On what date did Hurricane Dorian make land, according to image A above? 2. In what direction did Storm Dorian move in image B, as it travelled from:
(a) The Atlantic to the Bahamas (b) The Bahamas to North America
These images are taken from a satellite used to track tropical storm movement. They show the movement of Hurricane Dorian from 2 to 6 September 2019.
1. Why do you think satellites are used to track hurricanes?
2. Based on the satellite images, on which date do you think the storm was at its strongest?
