22.1 Urban Change
The growth of both the size and number of urban areas (towns and cities) is sometimes referred to as urbanisation . Urban areas around the world are constantly undergoing urban change . This is the process whereby cities, towns and other built-up areas develop, usually to meet the changing needs of their populations. This process can result in changes to how the urban land is used, to the types of buildings constructed and to the expansion of urban areas.
These two photographs show Shenzhen, one of the fastest-growing cities in China. This was a small fishing village as recently as 40 years ago (image A). Today it has a population of over 12 million. What do you think caused so many people to move to this area?
