5. Ireland’s fishing ports
6. Soil types in Ireland
The locations of Ireland’s fishing ports (areas for ships to dock in) are influenced by historical and physical factors. Like forestry, fishing can occur in counties where the soil is too poor for profitable farming, e.g. Killybegs in Co. Donegal. Historically, people in these areas needed to make a living and could not rely on farming to do so. Fishing became an alternative source of income.
Fishing ports are also located in areas with sheltered bays, e.g. Dunmore East in Waterford. Bays offer protection from storms and waves that can damage ships. Towns and cities located on the coastline have better access to the sea.
Communicating Work with the person sitting next to you.
1. On figure 5, locate two ports that are found in areas with poor soil (figure 6). Name the ports, identify the types of soil there and say why fishing ports may have been set up there.
2. On the same map, locate two ports found in areas with good soil. Name the ports, identify the soil types and explain why fishing ports may have been set up there.
