Short Term The Chilean president arranged for retailers to distribute necessary items free of charge in the days after the earthquake.
Some 10,000 Chilean troops were dispatched to help with the recovery and to keep order. Aid was provided by the United Nations and from the United States, the European Union and several Asian countries.
Long Term
Four months after the earthquake, more than 50,000 homes had been built and grants provided to many people who had lost their homes. Roads and airports that had been damaged were repaired.
