What do these two photographs tell you about life in Ulster long after the initial plantation? Managing information and thinking
Push Factors
At the start of the 1600s, unemployment was rising in Scotland. Tenant farmers were desperate enough to leave their homes to travel to Ulster in the hope of a better life.
England and Scotland were becoming overpopulated.
Pull Factors
Cheap land was promised.
Some planters wanted to introduce their religious beliefs and customs to help ‘civilise’ the native Irish.
Barriers to Migration
There was fear of attacks by the native Irish.
New planters were expected to build large castles to protect themselves, which was costly and took time.
