Make a list of anything not referred to in figure 1 that you use or see every day that may be made from a rock or mineral.
Glass: Made from sand (which is made up of quartz). Also comes from glass sand.
Brick: Can come from clay to make red or yellow brick,or can come from limestone. Used in building houses.
Slate: A rock of many layers. Used to make roof slates.
Oil or Petroleum: Used to fuel cars.
Coal: Used to make heat by burning.
Silica: Used in making electronic items like computers.
Marble: Used in columns and fireplaces.
1. Uses of rock 5.2 The Rock Cycle
Based on their origin or how they were formed, rocks are divided into three groups: igneous , sedimentary and metamorphic . Rocks are constantly changing in a process known as the rock cycle .
Copper: Extracted from copper ore and used in water pipes.
Iron ore: Used in making steel pipes, pots and pans.
Aggregate: Crushed rock of various types, including basalt and limestone. Used in building roads.
