Relief and drainage can influence route ways – displayed on OS maps in the form of roads, railway lines and canals – in a number of ways.

Roads usually occur at bridging points over rivers. Roads will avoid parts of rivers that flood regularly, e.g. a floodplain (see Chapter 10: Rivers).
Roads avoid high altitude, preferring lowland areas, as they are easier to build on.
