Case Study: The Alps The Alps is a long row of mountains that stretches across seven European countries. They formed 35 million years ago during the Alpine folding period, when the African and Eurasian Plates collided.

Look at the map in figure 5. Identify the countries the Alps occupy. Which of these countries is not a member of the EU?
5. The Alps – stretching across Europe Life in the Alps Social Impact Despite many positive social impacts, life in the mountains can still present some challenges.
1. Accessibility Many parts of the Alps are difficult to access as slopes can be very steep. Road-building is expensive. Living in upland areas can be challenging as they can experience colder temperatures and higher levels of snow, rainfall and winds. As a result, fewer people live there.
2. Farming
Dairy farmers are very busy during summer months milking cows and making cheese. Hay is also made to prepare for the cold winter months. During winter, farming is very difficult.
