4. Wind Direction and Speed A wind vane (see the photograph on the next page) is used to indicate the direction of wind (the moving air in the atmosphere).
The speed or strength of wind is measured using an anemometer (see the photograph on the next page) in units of kilometres per hour (km/h).
How Wind Is Created
Wind is created when the sun warms air in the atmosphere. This heated air begins to rise and cold air rushes in to take its place. This constant moving of warm and cold air creates wind.

To feel the movement of air or wind in action, have a classmate stand by the closed door of your classroom, and then open it quickly. Ask your classmate what they experience/feel.
