Sketching OS maps is another important geographical skill. A sketch map is a hand-drawn copy of an OS map. When sketching an OS map, there are a number of steps to follow.
You can use these steps to draw sketch maps of 1:10 000, 1:25 000 and 1:50 000 scale OS maps.
How to draw a sketch map Step 1: Measure the map. Draw a rectangular frame for the sketch map. It should be half the size of the OS map. Step 2: Using a pencil, lightly divide both the OS map and the sketch into segments.
Step 3: Insert the coastline (if any) on the sketch. Insert and name the other required features, leaving out any unnecessary details. Indicate north with a direction arrow on the sketch.
Step 4: Give the sketch a title. Step 5: Beside or below your sketch, provide a key/legend that details the key items as drawn on your sketch.

You do not have to colour your sketch map. You may use different shading to highlight different areas such as water or mountains.
