15. Global Climates 15.2 Classifying Global Climate Types
There are many different types of climate found in different parts of the world. Each has its own characteristics , e.g. the region where it is found, its average temperature, hours of sunshine and levels of precipitation.
There are three broad categories of climate: hot , temperate and cold . Each of these includes a number of climatic types:
the Equator
Hot Climates Near to
Temperate Climates
In middle latitudes
Cold Climates
Close to the poles
Equatorial Savanna Hot desert
Latitude: measurement of location north or south from the equator
To help tell the difference between different climate types, we will examine certain characteristics that are unique to each one:
Location (where they are found) Temperature Levels of precipitation (e.g. rain, hail, sleet or snow).
Working with others
Study the table above. With the person sitting next to you, take turns picking a climate type and stating which category it belongs to. For example, ‘Boreal is a cold climate’.
