Settlement patterns mean the general way or shape that houses are distributed (spread out) on an OS map. Rural settlement generally has three patterns: dispersed , linear and nucleated . Definitions of these types of settlement can be found in Chapter 21: Rural and Urban Settlement in Ireland.
