Urban Planning
You may think that the development of large towns or cities happens by chance and in an uncontrolled way, but this is not the case. Urban planning is the process of designing and shaping urban areas, such as towns and cities.
A very recent example of urban planning in Ireland was the choice of location for the new children’s hospital in Dublin. Photo A on the next page shows the site before building began.
The new children’s hospital is being built on the existing St James’s site. It is expected to be completed by November 2023. Photo B on the next page shows what the new development is expected to look like.
You can identify urban planning when you see evidence of: Traffic management Special zones for housing, business and shopping Streets meeting at right angles; they can form an orderly grid, or square-like patterns Specially designated green areas, parks and sports fields Central areas such as town squares Trees, planted to offer greenery and shade.
