30. Globalisation Case Study: Globalisation, Population and Urbanisation in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil and has a population of 6.5 million people. Rio has grown rapidly over the last 50 years to become a major industrial, administrative, tourist and commercial centre. The staging of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games – major international events – brought global attention to the city.
Economic growth and globalisation have attracted many internal and international migrants to the city. This has resulted in population growth and this has made Rio an ethnically mixed city, with migrants coming from many different places.
Many have migrated from rural areas of Brazil to Rio. Many have migrated from Argentina and other South American countries.
