Choosing Suitable Sites and Extracting Samples First you need to choose three sites from which to extract soil samples.
Choosing your sites
Study the weather in the days leading up to taking your soil samples. Avoid taking your samples after long periods of rain, as the soil may be flooded, which will give you a false profile. To this end, download a weather app on your phone and monitor the weather for the week ahead.

Choose sites that have grass or plant cover. Identify three contrasting soil profile sites from which to take your samples. Site A could be a garden, Site B could be a forest and Site C could be a coastal/river area.
Use a measuring tape or metre stick to map out a 2 m square area in each of these three sites from which to take your samples.
1. Insert trowel to desired depth. 2. Re-insert trowel next to first opening to create a slice.
3. Remove trowel with soil slice intact.
4. Cut a 2.5 cm-wide strip from centre of the soil slice.
5. Remove grass and add the soil to your bucket.
6. Return remaining soil to the opening.
7. Gather five random soil samples in total from the specific site using the same process.
Repeat this process for each of the three sites identified: extract and mix five soil samples from each specific area and place each in a sandwich bag. Label the sandwich bags A, B and C.
