Junior Cycle Geography CYCLONE Reviewing Development
The UN reviews the status of countries every three years. Using many factors, including GNI, the UN examines and decides whether countries can be classified as more or less economically developed.
Slowly Developing and Quickly Developing Countries
This table of data from the UN shows the status of a selection of developing countries. The years indicate when the country was/will be considered as ‘quickly developing’, or when it was deemed to be ‘slowly developing’.
Countries with green arrows: These economies are considered to be quickly developing (or are on track to be considered as such). They have improved (or will improve) to such an extent that they are now considered more economically developed than previously.
Countries with blue arrows: These economies are considered to be slowly developing, or, worse still, to have stopped developing altogether.
Question Time
1. Using an atlas or Google Maps, find the locations of these countries and determine whether they are found in the rich North or the poor South.
2. Can you identify a common trend in the locations of the majority of these countries?
3. All of the countries listed here have one thing in common. Can you guess what that might be? (Hint: think of the empires of Britain, France, Portugal and others.)
