1. What would a U-shaped valley have looked like prior to glaciation? 2. What is a fjord? 3. What is a tarn? 4. What name is given to the ridge between two cirques? 5. Select one feature of glacial erosion. (a) Explain how that feature was formed. (b) Name one example of that feature. (c) Draw a labelled diagram of that feature.
12.3 Transport and Deposition by Moving Ice
As a glacier moves, it transports eroded material. These materials are carried on the surface of the ice ( supraglacial transport), within the ice ( englacial transport) and underneath the glacier ( subglacial transport).
1 Supraglacial: These are materials found on the surface of the glacier, along the top or sides. These materials are carried along as the glacier moves. This material has usually fallen down the mountain and landed on the sides or top of the glacier.
2 Englacial: This is any regolith (loose material) trapped within the ice, including material that has fallen down cracks in the ice.
3 Subglacial: This is loose regolith trapped underneath the glacier and dragged along in the bottom of the ice.
8. How material is transported by a glacier 2 Englacial 3 Question Time
1. Name and describe the three ways that glaciers transport materials. 2. Draw and label a diagram showing how glaciers transport eroded material.
