Locating Places on Photographs Vertical photographs
To locate features on a vertical photograph, divide it into nine equal squares (figure 1). Give the location of the feature using the name of the square in which the feature is found.

Oblique photographs
To locate features on an oblique photograph, you must first divide it into nine equal squares (figure 2). Give the location of the feature using the name of the square in which the feature is found.
The areas nearest the camera are called the foreground . They cover smaller areas but will appear larger in the image.
The areas furthest from the camera are called the background . They cover very large areas of land but appear smaller.
