19.4 Individual Migration Case Study: Edelle’s Story
Edelle McCrudden is an ambitious and energetic woman. Born and raised in Co. Monaghan, she was a school prefect in her post-primary school, took a leading role in her local youth group and achieved over 500 points in her Leaving Certificate examination.
Edelle migrated from Monaghan to Dublin to study Science Education. She found shared accommodation in Dublin.
‘I was so nervous and excited at the same time. Dublin offered many fantastic universities, along with social opportunities and a diverse culture that was more than I had access to in my quiet, rural village. Although I would miss my family and friends in Monaghan, my educational goals would only be achieved by going to university. I knew that financially it would be a struggle, so I would have to balance study and social events with a part-time job to afford my four-year degree.’
Having graduated with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, Edelle began her employment as a teacher in a post-primary school in Dublin. She moved further away from the city to be able to afford rent.
