Junior Cycle Geography CYCLONE Social Impact 3. Avalanches
Devastating avalanches happen when snow and ice suddenly come loose and crash down mountain slopes. The impact of climate change on avalanches is being investigated. Scientists are concerned by increased avalanche activity.
4. Recreational activities
Skiing can take place all year round in some areas. The mountains provide a great way for people to enjoy the outdoors by hiking, walking, skiing and snowboarding.
Economic Impact Living near the Alps can have benefits, especially for the local economy.
1. Farming The fold mountains of the Alps are used to farm sheep, goats and cattle. In the summer months, the animals are moved further up the slope to graze. The upland areas of the Alps provide the ideal landscape for this type of farming.
Soil can be thin and poor quality, allowing only for rough- grazing, which can make farming difficult or unprofitable.
2. Hydroelectric power
The water from melting snow is used to generate hydroelectric power (where moving water is used to create electricity). Water is a sustainable energy resource as it can be used over and over again and does not negatively impact on the local environment. It is good for both the economy and the environment.
3. Tourism
Many people visit the Alps to ski or snowboard in winter, or hike or climb in summer. Visitors will stay in hotels, spend money in restaurants and buy local produce. The income generated by tourism can provide a better standard of living for locals.
1. Name the two plates that collided to form the Alps. 2. How do fold mountains impact on settlements and farming in the Alps? 3. Describe one positive and one negative impact of fold mountains for those living in the Alps.
