28. Human Development and Development Assistance How Does Irish Aid Help Human Development?
The Irish government is helping efforts towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this, Irish Aid’s main areas for ODA include:
Eliminating poverty:
Irish Aid is committed to eradicating poverty in its partner countries through long-term aid.
Eliminating hunger: Irish Aid responds
to emergency situations by providing short-term
assistance in the form of food. It is also committed long term to eradicating global hunger.
Promoting gender equality: Irish Aid is committed
to focusing on women’s and girls’ rights in developing countries, e.g. by providing and
promoting access to education, or campaigning against gender-based discrimination and violence.
Sustainability: ‘A sustainable world
requires the protection of our natural world.’ That means Irish foreign assistance is
committed to being sustainable and supporting countries to achieve climate resilience and sustainable resource management.
