17.1 What Is Soil?
Soil is the thin, uppermost layer of the earth. Without soil, plants could not grow and there would be no food for land animals. Therefore, soil is an essential natural resource (something created by nature and a useful resource to humans). Soil uses include:
Agriculture: Soil is fertile and has the vital nutrients needed to support plant growth for human and animal needs.
Building: Soil can be used to build. A lot of building materials (bricks, etc.) can be made from soil. It is also mixed with cement to offer support since it is compact and can hold material.
Storing harmful greenhouse gas emissions: Plants and soils together absorb
about 30% of the CO2 emitted by human activities each year. This will be explained further in Chapter 24.
