5.1 Vocabulary


LANGUAGE NOTE Vocabulary sets Depending on the group, you may want to explain that words that describe a category or subset of words are called hypernyms (e.g., disease). Words describing members of a category are called hyponyms (e.g., parasitic). A hyponym of one set is often the hypernym of another – for example: Hypernym Hyponym disease parasitic parasitic malaria


If you explain these terms to the students, it may help to remind them that they have seen the hyper~ (above) and hypo~ (below) prefi xes used in other medical contexts.


A few ways of categorizing diseases are shown in the answers below. T e list is not exhaustive.

Remind students that synonyms don’t always have exactly the same meaning. Highlight the example of prognosis and prediction: prognosis is usually used in a medical sense, whereas prediction is used in a more general sense.
