T is introductory unit aims to begin to build students’ medical vocabulary and to develop their skills in listening and note-taking. Guidance on good practice in skills development for listening and note-taking is provided in the Skills Bank.
T e unit has two sets of listening texts. T e fi rst (in Lesson 1.2) is a lecture which provides an overview of medicine and its diff erent branches. T e second is a series of mini lectures on diff erent aspects of medicine. In this series, students listen to the lecture introductions (Lesson 1.3) and then to the complete lectures (Lesson 1.4), and practise their listening skills, note-taking and ability to speak from their notes.
