Work through the Vocabulary Bank and Skills Bank as a revision of previous study.
Ask students to consider the issues which could arise when drawing up questionnaires for patient surveys. In particular, they should bear in mind the evidence from Unit 11 that patients cannot be relied on to understand the information on a consent form and may not, therefore, understand a questionnaire, even if it is written in simple language.
T ey should choose an appropriate topic and practise writing questions in the simplest language possible while still retaining the sense of the question.
Some initial topics could include:
• asking patients if they feel they fully understand the implications of a treatment when it is explained by their doctor
• asking patients if they feel comfortable asking their doctor questions if there is something they don’t understand
• asking patients if they clearly understand the instructions they are given for taking medication they have been prescribed
More advanced topics might include eliciting from patients which factors are responsible for their lack of understanding, their lack of comfort in asking questions or their failure to understand instructions on taking prescribed drugs.
