T is lesson introduces the research report, focusing on research on the involvement of people from ethnic minorities in medical research. Students practise identifying the diff erent elements of a report. T ey are also introduced to a range of relevant vocabulary and practise putting verbs into the correct form.
Lesson aims
At the end of this lesson, students should: • have practised identifying diff erent research types • understand the structure of a research report
• understand what a typical introduction, methods section and conclusion should contain
Introduction
In preparation for looking at the structure of a research report, revise the sections for an essay: introduction, body, conclusion. Ask students what should go in each section. Elicit ideas for introductions and conclusions. Do not correct students at this point.
Remind students about methods for doing research (see Unit 5). Ask students what kinds of research would be appropriate if you want to fi nd out what patients think of a particular service. (Primary research is best: surveys, questionnaires and interviews, to provide both quantitative and qualitative information.)
Ask students what kinds of research would be appropriate if you want to fi nd out what the issues relating to a specifi c topic are. (Secondary sources are the easiest to use, e.g., database searches using PubMed, Google, professional reports, reference books, etc.) Tell students that the next two lessons will focus on writing up research in reports. Ask for suggestions for suitable sections of a research report. Do not correct students at this point.

After completing their work, students can compare their reports with the models in the PDF.

Review the questions with the students, and then set them for individual work and pairwork checking. Tell students that they may need to use a dictionary to check the pronunciation and grammar of the words.
