SKILLS BANK 4.2 Doing effective online research
T e objective of this lesson is to introduce students to some key aspects of searching for academic texts online and to give them an opportunity to practise their research skills. Students will discuss ways of assessing Google Scholar search results and practise identifying suitable keywords. Students will need access to the internet for the last of the activities in this lesson. If this is not possible, then the fi nal activity can be carried out by students individually outside class.
Lesson aims
At the end of this lesson, students should: • be aware of diff erent kinds of online resources they can use for research
• have practised identifying appropriate keywords for searching for specifi c topics
• be aware of criteria to help identify good-quality search results
Introduction
Begin by asking students to share their experiences of searching for information about a specifi c topic. T is can be done as a class or in smaller groups, with feedback in a whole-class discussion. Emphasize that there are many similarities between fi nding information in their fi rst language and in English (though of course there are also diff erences). Try to elicit any use of non-internet sources, such as fi nding books in a library, and emphasize the usefulness of these sources.

1. Present the topic visually: assessing wounds remotely using digital images.
Encourage students to break the topic down so that they can see three sub-topics – each of which could be part of a broader subject area.
• Wound assessment – which could include any type of wound
• Remote diagnosis and assessment – which could include diff erent types of conditions
• Using digital images for diagnosis – which could include diagnosing diff erent conditions using images

Set for individual work and pairwork checking. Feed back visually, eliciting students’ views on the importance of each of the criteria.
Remind students that these criteria are to help them to think about identifying texts which are potentially relevant. T ey will need to read them more carefully to identify whether they are actually relevant or not.

Introduce or elicit the notion of search operators. For example, using AND between the keywords will restrict the results to documents which contain all of the keywords. T ey can also combine synonyms using OR so that results which include either of the two sets of keywords will be included. You might like to refer them to Skills Bank 4.2 at this point so that they can look at other operators, such as double quote marks.
Set for pairwork, and feed back visually. If variations on the answers below are provided, ask students to explain their choices.
