T is lesson introduces the topic of public health with various vocabulary activities. Students link photographs and short texts to public health vocabulary. T ey also cover some fi xed phrases from spoken academic English which can help them to predict the type of information which follows.


Lesson aims


At the end of this lesson, students should: • know some key compound nouns from public health medicine


• recognize key academic fi xed phrases to help with listening


• have created word families for vocabulary related to public health


Introduction


Introduce the topic for the unit. Visually present the phrase public health, and ask students what they think this means. Elicit diff erent opinions, and encourage discussion. Ask them to think about what public health might include and what they understand by public health in their own country.


Visually present a defi nition on the board, such as:


Public health is the prevention of disease and the promotion of physical, mental and social well-being on a nationwide scale as opposed to on an individual level.


(T is defi nition is adapted from the World Health Organization.)


Explain to students that they will be looking at diff erent aspects of public health in the unit.
