Begin by reminding students of the task set by the lecturer at the end of Part 4.
Tell the students that they are going to work together in groups to fi nd out more about what diff erent types of research there are and why they are useful.
Ask students to allocate a diff erent type of research to each member within their groups of four.

Alternatively, you could give out handouts of the individual sets of notes as provided in the PDF, so as to reduce the risk of students reading about multiple research types.

T is is an opportunity for students to use the signpost language they have been practising in the unit. Refer students back to Skills Bank 5.1. T ey can also use the adverbs and other phrases from Vocabulary Bank 5.3. Students can follow the notes from the Resources closely (presenting a defi nition and advantages/disadvantages) and add more detail if they like.
Closure
In their groups, ask students to discuss which research method(s) (primary, secondary, qualitative or quantitative) would be most suitable for the following research projects:
1. Studying the experiences of patients with chronic back pain
2. Evaluating a new technique to help patients stop smoking
3. Evaluating the success of TB vaccination programmes in diff erent countries over 30 years
4. Evaluating the eff ectiveness of a new drug for lowering blood pressure
Explain that they should comment on the advantages and disadvantages of diff erent methods and give reasons for their choices. Explain that more than one type of research can be used on each project.
Monitor interaction in the groups. Encourage and correct pronunciation where appropriate.
Provide some visual feedback to the class using the table on the next page.
