According to Beauchamp and Childress (2019), an ethical approach to medicine requires doctors to respect the principles of autonomy, benefi cence, nonmalefi cence and justice. T ese are implicit in most clinical guidelines, but there is a strong case for making them explicit.


Firstly, this could help with decision-making in the clinical setting. For example, a patient who is a Seventh-day Adventist may refuse to consent to treatment, such as a life-saving blood transfusion, on religious grounds. T is is diffi cult for a medical practitioner because respecting the principle of autonomy means giving a person undergoing treatment the right to make decisions about their care. However, respecting the principle of benefi cence obliges them to cure the sick person if possible. As a result of these confl icting requirements, physicians can face an ethical
