4.4 Extending skills


Remind students of the guidance on making notes from Skills Bank 1.3 and 2.1, and encourage them to think about what the key points are from each source.

Refer students to Skills Bank 4.1 and 4.3 for guidance on using discourse markers and for noting references. If students are interested, they could also look at Skills Bank 10.3 at this stage, which gives much fuller advice on how to produce in-text citations and a reference list in Vancouver style.


Depending on the time available, you may want to set this activity to be completed outside the class.


Closure


T is activity helps students to get more practice in formulating a search question and in carrying out a search. It may help if you tell them that some medical libraries have a form which can be used to request an online database search. In this activity, they will play the parts of the person requesting the search and the person who has to carry out the search.


4.4_Closure


Ask students to think of a healthcare topic for which they would like to fi nd a summary of current knowledge. T ey should create a search request form to request the search. You could use the model provided in the PDF.


Diff erent variations are possible here. Students can pair up and exchange search requests, or the search requests can be distributed at random.


Students carry out the assigned search and identify additional keywords if appropriate. T is is a good time to remind them of the list of criteria for assessing a search result from Lesson 4.3. Remind students that they should fi nd one paper which they think is appropriate (this is likely to be a review paper), and that they should make a note of any additional keywords they have found. T ey can also add any other comments to the original search request form.

Depending on the arrangements, students can feed back to each other, or can feed back individually to the group on any issues they encountered during the search process.


If necessary, the searching can be carried out outside the classroom, with the exchange of papers and review of the activities used as an introduction for another lesson.
