Sample Reflection Note
Here is an excellent Refl ection Note written by a student in 3rd Year. This student had written a mystery short story in 2nd Year. She wrote it after she had fi nished Collection 2 Journeys. She was inspired by Roald Dahl’s story ‘The Landlady’ in that collection.
When it came to 3rd Year, she decided that her 2nd Year short story was one of the best pieces she had written over the two years, so she decided to use this short story as a rough draft and then to improve it and hand it in as one of her two best pieces for her CBA 2.
This is a high-quality refl ection. The student explains how much she learned about writing. She is also an excellent critic of her own work.
REFLECTION NOTE SCHOOL Fire and Ice Academy STUDENT J. K. Dickens TITLE/GENRE ‘Vanished’ – A mystery short story
I chose this genre because: I enjoyed Roald Dahl’s mystery story ‘The Landlady’, about Billy Weaver who disappears in a very strange Bed and Breakfast. I decided to write a mystery short story about someone who disappears, but my story has a happy ending, with the person being discovered years later.
The student explains that she was inspired by a particular short story that she enjoyed.
I read a lot of other mystery stories to get more ideas and good vocabulary. By doing this, I improved my descriptions of people and places, and I found some unusual names for my characters. I also listened to audio stories because I’m entering this story in a competition for audio short stories!
The student shows that she has read around her genre, picking up imaginative ideas, good vocabulary and interesting names of people and places to make a story more interesting and enjoyable.
