In this collection you learned how to study and appreciate poetry. While you may not always understand a poem at fi rst, you now know how to recognise many of the techniques that poets use in their work. All of this will help you to show what you know.
My Oral Communication Task
Choose a poem from this collection and prepare a three-minute presentation about it that you could deliver to your classmates and teacher.
TO PREPARE ❍ Make a list of key questions about the poem to guide my research ❍ Research the poet’s life, infl uences and other works ❍ Listen to readings of other poems from this collection and other sources ❍ Plan to speak for three minutes
❍ Draft my work fi rst, practise it (have a classmate or teacher listen) and then edit it
I MUST ❍ Include an introductory statement with some background on the poet ❍ Mention the theme, at least two key images and two poetic techniques used ❍ Include a reading of some/all of the poem in my talk ❍ Use the speaking tips on page 285 when practising
❍ Conclude by inviting questions from my audience and thanking them for listening
