Give Thoughtful Value Judgements on a Key Scene [R7]
Describe what happens in a key moment you liked from a novel or play you have studied. Explain why you liked it. Sample Answer (Ordinary Level) Title of novel: Author:
Stone Cold Robert Swindells
A key moment I liked from this book is when Link and Ginger pay a man called Captain Hook so they can spend the night on his boat because it shows they are fed up. Link and Ginger are homeless and are looking for anywhere warm to stay. Captain Hook gets homeless people to pay for a space on his boat but the boat is overcrowded and dangerous. I really felt sorry for the characters in this scene because this is their only choice.
use of ‘I’ indicates a personal response
I also like this scene because it shows how people on the street are treated. Ginger convinces Link that they should stay on the boat for one night and that he will pay for him. They pay six pounds to Captain Hook but the boat stinks of ‘damp, unwashed bodies’ and they are tripping over people in the bad light. I found it interesting that Captain Hook can get away with this business so easily. The police don’t care because the homeless people are off the street but it also means they will never get proper help.
The second paragraph explains why the student likes this key moment and again uses PIE to develop the answer.
uses the term ‘key moment’ from the question and develops the point with ‘because it shows …’
